About the work; 'Shahin'

The desert seems almost like a place for those who have failed to belong anywhere, to retreat to. ‘Shahin’ draws parallels between a blanket and the desert sand dunes, exploring the intersection between comfort, heritage, belonging, and escapism. Revealed from underneath, ‘Zendegi ya’ani’ is a commentary on spiritual escape and an inward search for meaning.

For men of western culture, the desert has often been something to be crossed rather than lived in. In this sense, it is a type of barrier to a promised land. Meanwhile, for people in the east, from old times, it was a desirable place to send young children to be brought up in, away from the city, in the cool desert air, and to learn the bedouin language. The desert has an equally strong relationship with religion and spirituality. In many ways, the desert is an escape in itself – as opposed to an obstacle to escape from. This piece compares the escapism and comfort of a blanket to sand dunes. Shahin, meaning peregrine falcon; the world’s fastest bird & animal, is considered a spirit that travels between worlds and brings messages from the other side. It acts as a symbol of spirituality, aspiration, and patience.
